چکیده

We report data which demonstrates a correlation between the magnitude of the Steady State Visually Evoked Potential (SSVEP) and visual vigilance. The SSVEP was recorded from 64 scalp sites and elicited by a 13 Hz uniform visual flicker presented while subjects undertook a visual vigilance task. Fifteen right-handed males were required to view three times a 180 second series of geometrical shapes; a continuous sequence of 60 squares, 60 circles and finally 60 squares. Just prior to the final trial subjects were asked to identify a target circle. A comparison of the last two trials indicated that the appearance of the target circle was associated with a transient SSVEP attenuation in the occipito-parietal and right pre-frontal regions. The same comparison indicated a pronounced SSVEP attenuation in the centro-parietal region peaking after the appearance of the circles. The distribution of the attenuation at the pre-frontal, centro-parietal and occipito-parietal regions was lateralised with the right hemisphere showing pronounced and long lasting effects. Aspects of normal brain function and dysfunction can be further explored using this novel technique.

Comparison of the Wave Amplitude of Visually Evoked Potential in Amblyopic Eyes between Patients with Esotropia and Anisometropia and a Normal Group

Background: We compared the wave amplitude of visually evoked potential (VEP) between patients with esotropic and anisometropic amblyopic eyes and a normal group. Methods: The wave amplitude of VEP was documented in 2 groups of persons with amblyopia (15 with esotropia and 28 with anisometropia) and 1 group of individuals with normal visual acuity (n, 15). The amplitude of P100 was recorded mono...

Fearful faces heighten the cortical representation of contextual threat

Perception of facial expressions is typically investigated by presenting isolated face stimuli. In everyday life, however, faces are rarely seen without a surrounding visual context that affects perception and interpretation of the facial expression. Conversely, fearful faces may act as a cue, heightening the sensitivity of the visual system to effectively detect potential threat in the environ...

Comparison Between Different Methods of Feature Extraction in BCI Systems Based on SSVEP

‎There are different feature extraction methods in brain-computer interfaces (BCI) based on Steady-State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) systems‎. ‎This paper presents a comparison of five methods for stimulation frequency detection in SSVEP-based BCI systems‎. ‎The techniques are based on Power Spectrum Density Analysis (PSDA)‎, ‎Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)‎, ‎Hilbert‎- ‎Huang Transform (H...

Effect of Stimulus Size and Shape on Steady-State Visually Evoked Potentials for Brain-Computer Interface Optimization

Steady-state visually evoked potentials (SSVEP) can be elicited by a large variety of stimuli. To the best of our knowledge, the size and shape effect of stimuli has never been investigated in the literature. We study the relationship between the visual parameters (size and shape) of the stimulation and the resulting brain response. A tentative physiological interpretation is proposed and the p...

The impact of visual distractions in SSVEP-based BCI

This paper presents the results of a user experiment designed to measure the impact of visual distractions when making use of steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP)-based braincomputer interfaces (BCI). Also the user experience when using such an interface is measured. A set of small applications was developed to simulate such a BCI using a gaze tracker. The impact of visual distraction...
